Zurich Police and Justice Centre: Security for those who provide justice
Located in the heart of the vibrant city of Zurich, the new competence centre in the fight against crime has been a beacon of excellence since 2022. Built on the former freight station site in Zurich-West, the Zurich Police and Justice Centre (PJZ) was one of the most impressive and challenging construction projects in Canton Zurich. The PJZ enabled the cantonal police force, formerly spread across 30-plus sites, to merge with the prosecution authorities and the police and justice cells – all in one centralised location.
A step into the future: everything under one roof.
Twenty years ago, Zurich’s Cantonal Council decided on the location of the PJZ; the foundation stone was finally laid in 2017. The shell was completed and the building opened for business in 2022. In total, around 2030 workplaces offer scope for innovative collaboration. Also on site are around 280 holding cells for preliminary arrests and pre-trial detention. All in all, the building meets all current and future police, law enforcement and prosecution service requirements, with room to expand. Safeguarded by our state-of-the-art technology, comprehensive protection was provided on the construction site. With the facility up and running, our intrusion detection, security management and video security systems continue to safeguard the premises.
Security right from the start.
The safety requirements of the construction project were made very evident following vandalism of a transformer in the site’s power plant shortly after the foundation stone was laid in 2017. Our SecuriSiteTec mobile security solution, which covered access control and video security, provided the technological basis for harmonious coexistence between people and technology during the construction phase. Three containers and two turnstiles controlled access at the main entrance. Anyone seeking entry had to be wearing an electronic badge. Numerous cameras throughout the site provided reliable surveillance of the perimeter. Thanks to intelligent software, every movement was automatically registered, with the alarm centre able to summon the emergency services if necessary. Thermal imaging cameras ensured detection of vandalism, attacks or intrusion at night.
Comprehensive safety solution in continuous operation.
Following the facility’s handover in 2022, the cantonal police have been responsible for the PJZ’s security. Nevertheless, the facility continues to rely on our proven security solutions, including a comprehensive SecuriSafe Expert intrusion alarm system, a g+m acoustic alarm system, a SecuriLink UMS universal management system, and a video intercom system installed in the cells area, operations centre and administration area.
